Wine FUNdamentals: A Wine Tasting Experience

You must purchase tickets for this event
here.

Do you ever walk into a store to purchase a bottle of wine without a clue of what to buy?

Would you like to feel more confident describing what a wine tastes like?

Do you wish you understood why you like some wines more than others?

Are you curious to know how red grapes can be used to make white wine?

My name is Lilia Alvarez Nevarez. I’m a wine expert, educator and co-founder of A Land

Beyond. I know that many people enjoy wine, but feel intimidated by it. Others spend a lifetime

sipping it without ever really taking a moment to fully appreciate it because they simply don’t

know how.

My friends at Zin Valle Vineyards and I believe that the more you understand wine, the more

you enjoy it. So June 3 and 4, I’ll be teaching Wine FUNdamentals: A Wine Tasting Class. If

you’d like to build up your wine knowledge and confidence and learn a method and vocabulary

for describing it, join me!

YOU’LL LEARN:

The different parts of the grape and the roles they play in a wine’s characteristics.

The different winemaking processes for white, red and rosé wines.

Winemaking techniques that affect wine aroma, flavor and structure.

A method for smelling and tasting wine that will help you discern wine characteristics and

communicate them to others.

YOU’LL TASTE: 4 wines (1 white + 1 red + 1 rosé + 1 sparkling)

YOU’LL LEAVE WITH:

Wine tasting insight from a WSET 2 certified wine expert.

A take-home wine tasting guide for future use.

Access to wine tasting journals for future use.

WHEN:

Saturday, June 3rd 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

OR

Sunday, June 4th 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

PREVIOUS ATTENDEE REVIEWS:

“So many of us wine drinkers are limited by our language around the subject. It’s always a

delicate balance between trying not to sound stupid and also trying not to sound pompous by

using words you heard other wine drinkers use. This class is masterfully led and taught by the

knowledgeable and charming Lilia, who has a way of teaching you the hows and whys on

YOUR level. My pallet finally has the vocabulary it needs to describe what it enjoys. I plan on

going to every class they offer.”

“Fun and educational. As a wine novice, it was amazing to learn more about why I enjoy the

type of wines that I do so I can confidently explore brands and find new favorites.”

“This class was worth your time. So much information was covered about wine in general, not

just a specific vineyard. Very informative, interactive, and fun.”

“This class provided the perfect foundation to create a better awareness around scent and

flavor notes.”

“This class was very informative and perfectly paced. Just the right amount of information to

keep you engaged with the ability to ask any questions and have them answered by someone

very knowledgeable was amazing. The class setting was perfect with the right amount of people

to have an enjoyable learning experience and still feel comfortable enough to ask questions.”

LILIA’S CLASS SNEAK PEAK:

Have you ever noticed that some red wines smell and taste like vanilla, coffee or baking spices?

These aromas and flavors occur when a wine has spent a good deal of time in oak barrels. The

size and age of the barrels and the amount of time a wine spends in them are a few of the

factors that impact how much influence the oak will have on the wine. They’re essentially

stylistic choices that winemakers can tweak to create the outcome they desire to bottle. This is

why some barrel aged wines exhibit very pronounced aromas and flavors from oak, while others

may exude just a hint.

You may or may not enjoy the aromas of vanilla and nutmeg wafting around in your wine glass.

But understanding what causes these characteristics in wine is an important step toward

determining how you feel about them. Then you can easily search for wines in stores and

restaurants that either do or don’t feature these traits. That’s empowering!
